Vår vistelse i Gaborone går mot sitt slut och vi är återigen fulla av intryck. Dagens höjdpunkt var mötet med Department of Social Protection, en avdelning inom Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. De gav oss gott om tid att presentera projektet och kommer att följa arbetet i Chobe District och skolan i Kachikau framöver. Deras intresse är betydelsefullt, så det var ett viktigt möte.

De blev också intresserade av våra kontakter med Autism Botswana. Vi diskuterade bl.a. problemet med att det inte finns något ord för ”autism” i det lokala språket Setswana och att det råder stor brist på utbildad personal som är specialiserad på de funktionshindrades behov. En gemensam utmaning som vi identifierade är att vi alla behöver bli bättre på att arbeta över förvaltningsgränser för att nå så goda resultat som möjligt.

Vårt sista studiebesök ägde rum på Motswedi rehabiliteringscenter. Det gav mycket inspiration som vi kan föra vidare till organisationen som vill bygga upp ett lokalt rehabiliteringscenter i Kasane. Ska bli spännande att träffa dem igen på torsdag.

Day two in Gaborone

Our stay in Gaborone is soon over and once again we are filled with impressions. The highlight of today was a meeting with the Department of Social Protection, within the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. They gave us plenty of time to present the project and will be following the work in Chobe District and the special unit school in Kachikau. Their interest is of great importance, so this was an important meeting.

They were also interested in our contacts with Autism Botswana. We discussed issues like the problem with lack of a word for “autism” in the local language Setswana and the fact that there are far too few educated professionals in the area of disability. A challenge we have in common is the need of more collaboration between different departments in order to achieve the best possible results.

For our last visit we went to Motswedi Rehabilitation Centre in Mochudi. They gave us lots of inspiration and ideas which we can give forward to the organisation that wants to build a local rehabilitation centre in Kasane. It will be exciting to visit their office on Thursday.

Rapport från Gaborone

Vi har tillfälligt delat på oss i projektgruppen. Anne-Lie Lindgren och Klara Blomdahl har åkt till huvudstaden Gaborone för att under två dagar träffa organisationer som vi hoppas kan vara med i vår referensgrupp kring projektet.

Det blev jack pot redan dag ett! I morse träffade vi Autism Botswana – en ideell organisation som arbetar för att öka kunskapen om autism och stötta familjer med autistiska barn. Vi hade så många gemensamma tankar och idéer att vi hade kunnat stanna kvar där hela dagen. De kommer bli en underbar samarbetspart. Fortsättning följer!

Nästa möte var med Botswana Cricket Association. Även de hade många spännande idéer och projekt med fokus på att göra sporten tillgänglig för både flickor, socioekonomiskt utsatta och funktionshindrade. Cricketplanen låg på Gaborones motsvarighet till Sportcentrum i Vänersborg och vem vet – kanske får vi se cricket hemma framöver?!

Report from Gaborone

We have temporarily divided the project group. Anne-Lie Lindgren and Klara Blomdahl has left Kasane for two days in Gaborone in order to meet organisations that we hope can contribute to the project and be part of our reference group.

We scored already day one! This morning we had a fantastic meeting with the NGO Autism Botswana. We have so much in common and share the same ideas in many respects. They will be a wonderful part in our project. To be continued!

Our next meeting was with Botswana Cricket Association. They also have a lot of exciting ideas and projects with focus on making cricket available for new groups such as girls, poor children and disabled people. The cricket field is to be found in an area with lots of different sports arenas – a bit like “Sportcentrum” in Vänersborg. Who knows – maybe we will see some cricket in Vänersborg in the future?!

Oj, vad tiden flyger iväg när man jobbar med ett bra projekt!

Igår var vi hela dagen på skolan i Kachikau. Det var roligt att träffa alla barnen igen och att lämna över dockorna som vi hade med oss från Slåttergatans dagliga verksamhet. Fokus låg sedan på att studera klassrumssituationen samt att diskutera olika arbetssätt med lärarlaget och ge pedagogiska tips. Det var roligt att se och höra hur mycket som har hänt sedan Social Inclusion 1.0 och att material från vårt förra besök fanns kvar och användes.

Idag, fredag, mötte vi styrelsen och medlemmar från CCRC (Chobe Committee Rehab Center) från Kasane. De är ett embryo till ett lokalt rehabiliteringscenter och kommer att fungera som en referensgrupp för oss framöver. Vi mötte också företrädare för rehabiliteringscentret i Thuso, som har tagit initiativ till CCRC och utbildat deras medlemmar.

Dagens mest känslosamma ögonblick var dock när en funktionshindrad kvinna berättade om den fotvandring hon ska göra från Kasane till Gabarone – en sträcka på 100 mil – för att öka medvetenheten om funktionshindrades möjligheter och rättigheter. Där och då fick vi ett kvitto på hur mycket attityderna har förändrats sedan förra projektet. Inte minst har de funktionshindrade själva fått en ökad självkänsla.

En ny person som vi har lärt känna dessa dagar är läraren Tirelo Ditlhahuno som arbetar med funktionshindrade barn och idrott. Hans tankar om fysisk aktivitet och våra tankar om dans och rörelse passar perfekt ihop. Ser fram emot att arbeta mer ihop med honom.

Time flies!

Yesterday we visited the school in Kachikau all day. It was lovely to meet all the children again and to give them the dolls made by a boy at the daily activity centre on Slåttergatan in Vänersborg. Our focus was then on studying the class room situation, discussing work methods with the teachers and giving them pedagogical advice. It was nice to see how much that had happened since last time and realising that the material we gave then is still in use.

Today, Friday, we met the board and members from CCRC (Chobe Committee Rehab Center) from Kasane. It is a small local rehabilitation centre that will become a reference group in our coming work. We also met representatives from the rehabilitation centre in Thuso, who have initiated CCRC.

The most emotional moment was when a disabled woman told us about the walk she attempts to make from Kasane to Gabarone – 1000 km – to raise awareness about possibilities and rights for disabled people. There and then we got a proof of the change in attitudes that has taken place since the last project.

Tirelo Ditlhahuno is a new acquaintance we have made the last two days. He is a teacher who works with disabled children and sports. His thoughts on physical activities corresponds very well with our thoughts on dance and movements. We’re looking forward to work more together with him.
